Chrome Nitride (CrN) Coating
Chrome nitride (CrN) shines in heavy-duty forming applications. (CrN is the dark grey bar in the chart.)
Due to CrN's toughness and lubricity, we've had customers that were polishing their dies every 300 - 500 hits that now get 25,000, or more, hits without touching their dies. Some have even gone over 100,000 hits.
CrN can be stripped from tools after use. As a result, many customers make use of stripping, repolishing and recoating to essentially make their tooling last forever.
Besides forming dies, many different types of wear components (pump parts, shafts, etc.) and medical parts can be coated with CrN to improve their lubricity and wear resistance, thereby increasing the life of the component 5 - 10 times, or more.
Benefits:
Good wear resistance
Excellent lubricity
2 - 10x tool life
Uses:
Forming Tools
Wear Components
Medical Components
Properties:
Thickness: .0001" - .0005"
Hardness: 2200 - 2400 Hv

Customer Comments:
In a drawing application (stainless steel, more pressure), the Alpha™ coated tooling only produced 15 parts and the parts were too hot to touch. Putting CrN on the tool resulted in over 500 parts, with the parts being just warm to the touch." - Sheet Metal Forming Customer
Uncoated, wood cutting blades last 3.5 to 4 hours between sharpenings. CrN coated, they last 8 to 10 hours. The CrN-coated shallow cutting blades (different design) last 8 to 10 times longer, compared to uncoated blades. - Wood Cutting Blades, plywood manufacturing application
