About AlTiN

Made for the temperatures TiN can't handle.

AlTiN keeps its hardness at temperatures that would degrade TiN, because the aluminum in the film oxidizes into a thin alumina layer right at the cutting edge. That alumina layer is a passive barrier: it protects the coating and the substrate underneath from further oxidation, and it dramatically extends life on dry and high-speed cutting.

If you're running dry or near-dry, machining hardened steel above 45 HRC, or seeing thermal wear on your cutting tools, AlTiN is our first recommendation. It also handles the intermittent heat of high-feed operations better than TiN or TiCN.

For lower-temperature abrasive wear (injection molds, forming dies), consider TiCN or CrN instead.

Best For

Where AlTiN wins

  • High-temperature millingKeeps hardness where TiN breaks down.
  • Dry & near-dry cuttingAlumina layer resists edge oxidation.
  • Hardened steel machiningReliable on tool steels above 45 HRC.
