Tips for safe shipping of tools.
Over the years, we've had a number of boxes opened up by UPS for inspection, tools unwrapped, and then thrown back into the box without being repackaged properly. Since tools can be expensive and UPS limits the amount of tool damage they'll pay for, here are some tips to make sure your parts reach their destination undamaged.
Bullet-shaped parts
If your parts look like they could be a firearms projectile, place them in clear tubing within a bag, or seal them down to cardboard, so x-ray operators can identify them without opening the packaging.
No bubble wrap on ambiguous parts
Do not wrap parts in bubble wrap if an x-ray machine operator could mistakenly identify them as a bullet. Bubble wrap gets opened and parts end up bouncing into each other for the rest of the trip.
Tape clear tubes shut
If using clear tubes, tape the ends shut or seal them tightly in a clear plastic bag so anyone who opens the box can see the parts without disturbing the packaging.
Foam-wrap heavy parts
Wrap heavier parts with foam packaging material and place them in a small box, then place several smaller boxes within a bigger outer box so they don't shift.
Use cardboard, heavy tape
Use cardboard boxes if possible and seal them with heavy-duty tape. Wooden or plastic crates are subject to a UPS upcharge if not enclosed in cardboard.
Insure expensive tooling
If you're shipping expensive tooling, purchase extra insurance. UPS limits how much they'll pay out on tool damage, and insurance is cheap relative to a tooling loss.
